Billing and subscriptions

Plans, trials, pausing, and payment management.

Plans

  • Free: core workflow features with no card required. Includes booking tracking (up to 5 bookings per month), limited invoicing (3 invoices per month), public profile, directory listing, availability calendar, and booking requests.
  • Basic: everything in Free, plus unlimited bookings and invoices, NHS pension form generation, expense and mileage tracking, payment follow-through, tax planning, document store, calendar sync, and booking confirmation emails. £14.99/month or £149.99/year.
  • Pro: £24.99/month. Includes everything in Plus, plus Xero 2-way sync, REST API access, advanced reporting, and priority email support.

Launch offer

Tip

Basic is £9.99/month for your first 3 months, then £14.99/month. This introductory rate is applied automatically when you subscribe to the monthly plan. Annual billing is £149.99/year from day one (equivalent to £12.50/month, a 17% saving over the standard monthly price).

The launch offer applies to new subscriptions only. You can cancel at any time during or after the introductory period.

14-day free trial

When you first upgrade to Basic, you get a 14-day free trial. During the trial you have full access to all Basic features. You will not be charged until the trial ends.

If you cancel before the trial ends, you revert to Free and are never charged. If you continue, billing begins automatically on day 15.

Promo codes

If you have a promo code, enter it at checkout before confirming your subscription. The discount will be applied to your first payment or as specified by the promotion.

Promo codes cannot be applied retroactively to an existing subscription. Only one code can be used per account.

Monthly vs annual billing

You can choose between two billing cycles:

  • Monthly: £14.99/month (£9.99/month for the first 3 months with the launch offer). Cancel or change plan at any time.
  • Annual: £149.99/year, paid upfront. This works out to £12.50/month, saving you approximately £30 compared to monthly billing over a full year.

You can switch between monthly and annual billing from the billing page at any time. When switching to annual, you are charged the prorated difference for the remainder of your current period.

Pausing your subscription

Taking a break from locum work? You can pause your subscription from the billing page. While paused:

  • Billing stops. You are not charged
  • Your data stays safe and accessible
  • You revert to Basic tier features until you resume
  • You can resume at any time and billing restarts immediately

Pausing is designed for maternity leave, sabbaticals, career breaks, or any period when you are not actively doing locum work. There is no limit on how long you can pause.

What happens when you cancel

If you cancel your subscription:

  • You keep access to all paid features until the end of your current billing period
  • After the period ends, your account reverts to the Basic tier
  • Your data is never deleted. Bookings, invoices, documents, and all records remain in your account
  • You can upgrade again at any time to regain access to Plus features

Managing your subscription

From the billing tab on your profile page you can:

  • Upgrade or downgrade your plan
  • Switch between monthly and annual billing
  • Apply a promo code
  • Pause or resume your subscription
  • Update your payment method
  • View your billing history and download receipts
  • Cancel your subscription

Subscription management is handled securely through Stripe. Sessional never sees or stores your card details. You can also access the Stripe billing portal directly for detailed payment history and card management.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a credit card for the Basic plan?
No. The Basic plan requires no payment method. You only need to enter card details when you choose to upgrade to Plus or Pro.
Can I try Plus before committing?
Yes. Every new Plus subscription starts with a 14-day free trial. Cancel before it ends and you will not be charged.
Will I lose my data if I downgrade to Basic?
No. All your data (bookings, invoices, documents, expenses) remains in your account. You just lose access to Plus-only features until you upgrade again.
Can I get a refund?
Monthly subscriptions are not refundable, but you can cancel at any time and continue using Basic until the end of your billing period. For annual subscriptions, contact support within 14 days of purchase for a full refund.
How do I apply a promo code to an existing subscription?
Promo codes can only be applied at checkout. If you already have an active subscription, contact support and we will apply the code manually if eligible.
What payment methods are accepted?
We accept all major credit and debit cards through Stripe, including Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.
