My father has been a GP for over 45 years. I grew up watching the reality of general practice: the early mornings, the home visits, the paperwork that never ended. When he worked as a locum between organisations, I saw something worse: the admin burden of running your own show with no proper tools.

Pension forms filled in by hand every month. Invoices rebuilt from memory. Rates and terms buried in email chains. Mileage scrawled on the back of envelopes at tax time. Payments chased with polite follow-up emails and hope.

Nothing was built for the way locum work actually runs: sessions across several organisations, pension forms tied to each one, invoices you raise yourself, and a regulator asking for evidence at the end of it. The nearest thing was generic freelancer software that knows nothing about an NHS pension tier or a revalidation cycle.

I'm a software engineer. So in 2014 I built him version one: a single-user tool that lived on his laptop, that he and he alone used to track every session, generate his pension forms, and chase his own invoices. He used it privately for a decade. It worked.

When I looked at what was available to other locum healthcare professionals, I was genuinely frustrated. The options were either expensive marketplace platforms that take a cut of every session, or nothing at all. So I rebuilt my dad's tool from the ground up, opened it to everyone, and shipped it as Sessional.

Sessional understands sessions and shifts, not gigs. It knows about NHS pension tiers, HMRC mileage rates, registration bodies (GMC, GPhC, HCPC, NMC, GDC, GOC) and the difference between a day rate and an hourly rate.

When you are ready, publish your profile. Organisations find you in the directory or via your link. They send requests directly. No one takes a cut.

Choose exactly what organisations see. Bank details and registration numbers are encrypted at rest. Export everything as CSV or JSON, and your records stay with you whether you cancel any time, or pause on Plus. Never sold.

Three clear plans. Basic is free, and it stays free, with no card. Plus at £14.99/mo unlocks the full toolkit. Pro at £24.99/mo adds API access, Xero sync, and advanced reporting. Plus and Pro start with a 14-day free trial the first time you subscribe: a card is taken at the start, nothing is charged until the trial ends, and you can cancel before then from your billing page. No per-shift fees.
