What Sessional does

Every feature, grouped by the job it does.

52live features

Eight groups, from logging a shift to exporting to your accountant. Each entry says what it does and which tier it is on. Nothing here is roadmap: if it is on this page, it is live today.

Group 01

Log every shift, however you get paid.

One record for self-invoiced, agency and PAYE work, with the role context that fits the shift.

Every session tracked from logged through to paid
01.01

Per-shift billing mode

Mark each shift self-invoiced, agency-managed, or PAYE at source.

Basic
01.02

Role context

Record a nurse doing HCA work, a paramedic doing ECA work, a support worker shift, and more, on the same record.

Basic
01.03

Calendar and availability

A monthly view across all organisations, and availability slots or date ranges for booking.

Basic
01.04

Calendar sync

A private iCal feed your own calendar subscribes to: Google, Outlook or Apple. Confirmed bookings update on their own, and you can regenerate the feed address at any time.

Plus
01.05

Double-booking prevention

Overlapping shifts are caught at the point of confirmation.

Basic
01.06

Bulk session import

Import past or upcoming sessions from a CSV in one go, with a template to download and per-row errors reported. Basic's monthly session cap still applies.

Basic

Group 03

Get booked, on your own terms.

A public profile, booking requests that reach you, and the terms of each booking written down before the shift.

03.01

Public directory and profile

Publish to the directory at your own slug, or keep it private.

Basic
03.02

Profile summary from your CV

Upload or paste your CV and get a draft profile summary to edit before anything is saved. The CV stays in your own document store, and nothing is published until you say so.

Basic
03.03

Booking requests

A public request form an organisation uses with no account, landing in your dashboard to accept or decline.

Basic
03.04

Booking messaging

Exchange messages with an organisation on a booking, on every plan. They write from the Send a message box on the signed link in the acceptance email, with no account of their own, and your reply reaches them by email. The only Basic limit is the five sessions a month.

Basic
03.05

Booking confirmations

Send a written confirmation of one or several bookings with the agreed terms. The organisation acknowledges it from a signed link, and the terms are frozen as they were when you sent it.

Plus
03.06

Cancellation protection

Cancellation terms per booking with profession-specific defaults. When an organisation cancels inside the notice period, generate the cancellation-fee invoice from the notice actually given.

Basic
03.07

Organisation lookup

Add an organisation from the NHS and CQC registers or a UK address search, and the name, type, ODS code and address fill themselves. Contacts and notes stay with it for every booking and invoice.

Basic

Group 04

Keep the books all year, not in January.

A tax reserve that updates as you log income, expenses logged against the right HMRC categories, and one page for what you are owed.

Year-to-date earnings and a recommended tax reserve, updated as you go
04.01

The Money page

What you are owed, what has been paid and what needs chasing, in one view, with the tax year each figure belongs to.

Basic
04.02

Expenses and HMRC mileage

Log expenses against 17 profession-aware HMRC categories with receipts attached, and mileage at 55p a mile for the first 10,000 and 25p after that. Mark an expense for the organisation to pay and it is offered, ticked, when you invoice that session. Billed expenses stay in your costs for tax and the page shows what came back.

Plus
04.03

Receipts read for you

Upload a receipt, or forward it from your own email address, and it arrives as a draft expense with the amount, date and vendor already read. PDFs, photos and iPhone HEIC. Nothing is added until you check the figures and confirm.

Plus
04.04

Earnings forecast

Year-to-date income, a forward tax-year projection, and a recommended reserve, broken out by employment bucket.

Plus
04.05

Multi-year tax planner

Income tax, National Insurance, and net pay for 2025/26 and 2026/27, with historical years to audit past earnings.

Plus
04.06

Peer rate benchmark

See where your rate sits against an anonymised peer set, with a minimum group size before any figure shows.

Plus
04.07

NHS Pension forms A and B

For GPs: Form A and Form B generated from your logged sessions, ready to send to the surgery or PCSE. The NHS pension year runs 1 April to 31 March, which is not the tax year, and the forms follow the pension year.

Plus
04.08

Ask Sandy

Ask plain-English questions about your own numbers. For anything that needs regulated advice, it points you to a tax adviser or accountant rather than answering.

Plus

Group 05

Keep your documents current, and prove it once.

Track every compliance document with its expiry date, hand an organisation exactly what it needs, and keep the record your regulator asks for.

Compliance documents with expiry tracking, in your pocket
05.01

Document store

Upload documents with expiry tracking and profession-specific categories, including midwifery PROMPT, NLS, CTG, and K2.

Plus
05.02

Compliance passport

Bundle chosen documents into a signed link an organisation opens with no account. View count, expiry, and revoke are yours. Sessional does not verify the documents: you decide what to include, and the organisation checks them.

Plus
05.03

Share by access code

Send chosen documents as a link locked behind an access code you read out over the phone, and revoke it whenever you like.

Plus
05.04

NMC revalidation tracker

Practice hours counted from your logged shifts against the 450-hour target, plus CPD, reflective accounts, feedback, and confirmation. Free on every tier, because revalidation is a regulatory obligation, not a paid feature.

Basic
05.05

Professional record and reflections

Every organisation, location and role you have worked in, from your logged sessions, with gaps flagged, in your regulator's shape: the GMC scope-of-work statement, the HCPC dated list, the NMC hours log. Reflections in your own words, typed, dictated as a voice note, or written with Sandy from your own notes, and checked for identifiers before they save. Where your regulator publishes a target, a monthly email as the cycle nears its end says what you have recorded, what is still short, and which recent sessions are worth writing up. Free on every plan, exports included: the PDF and text exports were on Plus until 8 September 2026.

Basic
05.06

Write it with Sandy

Jot rough notes, or answer up to eight questions one at a time, by keyboard or by voice. Sandy writes only from your notes or your answers. You read every line and confirm it is your own account before it is saved. Your regulator holds you responsible for the record. Voice notes are transcribed in the EU and the audio is never stored. Three reflections and five voice notes a day on Basic, 30 and 60 on Plus. Sandy will also suggest up to five learning needs for your personal development plan, drawn from your own sessions and your own reflections, ten times a day on every plan. Each says which part of your record it came from. The suggestions are yours to copy; nothing is saved, and the plan stays yours to write.

Basic
05.07

CPD evidence store

Course certificates in their own store, kept apart from the compliance documents an organisation asks for. The provider, title, date and hours are read off each certificate for you to confirm or correct, then filed against a record. Where you have receipts by email, forwarding a certificate to that address lands it here instead of your expenses, with a one-press move in either direction for the times that goes wrong. 50 certificates on Basic, unlimited on Plus, and the whole store downloads as one ZIP with an index on every plan.

Basic
05.08

Feedback rounds

Colleague and patient feedback, asked of the people already in your session log. Tick the contacts at each organisation you worked at, add anyone else by name, and send. Patients answer from an A5 card with a QR code, one per session or one for the round. Sessional collates: below five responses you are told only that fewer than five have arrived, and at five and above you get the totals for each question and the comments, undated and in an order unrelated to when they were written, never one person's answers and never which of the people you invited replied. Every comment is checked twice before anyone sees it, once by a rules-based check and once by a language model in the EU. Counts update each morning, nothing can be deleted or cherry-picked, and exporting the report records a version of the figures with a code an appraiser can check. Collated, not benchmarked. Collecting is on Plus. Reading a report you have collected never needs a paid plan, and neither does its verification code, its PDF or the appraisal pack section: those are free on every plan.

Plus
05.09

Feedback reports

Every report you have collected is yours on any plan, including after a downgrade: the totals and spread for each question, the comments, the themes panel, the PDF with the verification code an appraiser can check at sessional.co.uk/verify/feedback/, the feedback section of the appraisal pack, and the one-press NMC practice-related feedback log for nurses and midwives. A plan that lapses mid-round withdraws nothing: invitations already sent keep working, responses keep arriving, and you can always close the round. Your evidence for an appraisal or a revalidation never depends on a subscription.

Basic
05.10

Appraisal pack

For GMC-registered professions: one PDF for the appraisal, with your scope of work, your reflections grouped by Good Medical Practice domain, your CPD activities and the certificates behind them, any gaps you have explained, and a coverage index counting what sits in each domain. It runs from your last appraisal date, or from a date you choose. Free on every plan.

Basic
05.11

Midwifery competency log

A separate evidence log for midwives: obstetric emergencies, CTG review, waterbirths, bereavement care, and more, rolled into the revalidation portfolio.

Basic

Group 06

Hand it on, in the shape they need.

Your records leave the way your accountant, your regulator or your next tool needs them.

06.01

CSV and PDF export

Export shifts and invoices to CSV, and your invoices and revalidation portfolio as PDFs. The expense and earnings exports sit with the plan those features are on.

Basic
06.02

Your data, exportable and erasable

Download everything you hold, shifts, invoices, expenses, earnings and documents, as CSV or JSON. Delete the account and the data goes with it, after a warning that offers the export first.

Basic
06.03

Xero sync

Push invoices as authorised and expenses as bills, with payment detection by webhook.

Pro
06.04

REST API

Bearer-token access with your own keys, and interactive docs.

Pro
06.05

Advanced reporting

Income trends, expense breakdowns, organisation analysis and session patterns, over the date range you choose, with CSV export.

Pro

Group 07

Run the account without a support queue.

The operational side stays quiet until it needs you.

07.01

Notifications, and the emails you choose

Workplace paid-claims, disputes and shift changes land on one notifications page. Ten email categories; eight you can switch off, and security and billing mail always arrives. They include the CPD and revalidation cycle reminder, which arrives as your cycle nears its end.

Basic
07.02

Support with a severity you choose

Raise a ticket with a category and severity, see the right help article suggested before you file it, and get replies by email. Pro tickets are routed first.

Basic
07.03

Pause your subscription

Billing stops, the data stays, and it resumes when you do.

Plus
07.04

Refer a colleague

Share your referral code from your profile. When a colleague upgrades to a paid plan, you receive a discount coupon.

Basic

Group 08

Built for the profession, not a generic locum.

17 professions across GMC, GPhC, HCPC, NMC, GDC and GOC, each with the labels, documents and rules that fit.

08.01

Profession-aware everything

Session or shift labels, registration number checks, document categories, session types and rate bands follow your profession. A pharmacist never sees a GP's pension forms.

Basic
08.02

Hourly, daily, or both

Rates and invoices follow how your profession bills: hourly for most, and either rate, shift by shift, for GPs, dentists, psychiatrists and optometrists.

Basic
08.03

Start without a card

Basic stays free with 5 sessions and 5 invoices a month, and needs no card. Plus and Pro start with a 14-day free trial the first time you subscribe: a card is taken at the start, nothing is charged until the trial ends, and you can cancel before then from your billing page.

Basic

17 professions | 6 regulators | Basic needs no card

Run your locum work like a business. Minus the accountant.

Keeps the records, does the sums. Filing and advice stay with you and your accountant.
