Free tools | No account needed
Free tools for UK locum clinicians.
Invoices, mileage, tax, NHS pension tiers, NHS enhancements, late payments and GP session rates: the sums locums do by hand every month, worked out in the browser for free.

A calculator for each sum, and a template.
Each tool runs without an account. Nothing you type is saved to a Sessional account unless you choose to sign up.
Working as a locum means doing your own paperwork: raising an invoice for every session, claiming mileage at the right HMRC rate, putting money aside for a tax bill that arrives months later, and checking that a bank shift paid the enhancement it should have. These tools answer those questions one at a time. They use the current published figures, such as the 2026/27 tax bands and the HMRC mileage rates, and say where each figure comes from. They are estimates to check your own numbers against, not tax or pay advice, and your accountant or your employer's payroll team has the final word.
- 01Locum invoice template
Fill in your details, the organisation and each session or shift, and download a clean PDF invoice with your payment terms and bank details on it. No account is needed to make one. It suits GP sessions, pharmacy and nursing shifts and every other profession Sessional supports, and it carries the VAT exemption wording most clinical work needs.
- 02HMRC mileage calculator
Work out a business mileage claim at the HMRC approved rates: 55p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in the tax year and 25p after that, for a car or van. Motorcycles (24p) and bicycles (20p) have their own flat rates, and journeys before 6 April 2026 use the earlier 45p rate, so pick the tax year you are filing for.
- 03Locum tax calculator 2026/27
Estimate income tax, Class 4 National Insurance and take-home pay on self-employed locum income for the 2026/27 tax year. It uses the England, Wales and Northern Ireland bands or the Scottish bands, so you can see roughly what to set aside before the 31 January payment. It is an estimate, not a tax return.
- 04NHS unsocial-hours calculator
Enter an Agenda for Change band and a shift window to see the enhancement for Saturday, night, Sunday and bank holiday hours, block by block. Bands 1, 2 and 3 each have their own multipliers and bands 4 to 9 share one pair, which is exactly where payslip errors tend to hide for nurses, midwives and allied health bank staff.
- 05NHS pension tier calculator 2026/27
Estimate your 2026/27 NHS pension tier as a locum GP: annualise your pensionable pay the way NHSBSA does and see the member contribution rate that tier carries. It covers England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and links the NHSBSA, PCSE and scheme pages its figures come from so you can check them before you declare a tier.
- 06Late payment interest calculator
Work out the statutory interest and fixed compensation you can add to a late locum invoice: 8% over the Bank of England reference rate, plus £40, £70 or £100 depending on the debt. It follows the Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998, fixes the rate by the date interest starts to run, and shows the daily figure as well as the total claim.
- 07Locum GP pay check
Enter a session fee and its length to see the hourly rate it works out at, set against Sessional's own reference rate and the median for your region. No sign-up and no email capture. The reference rate is Sessional's published figure, not a BMA rate, and the page says where each number comes from.
When one sum becomes a habit
Keep the records behind the numbers.
The tools answer one question at a time. Sessional keeps the whole year: every session, invoice, expense and mileage journey in one place, with the tax reserve and the NHS pension forms worked out from the same records. The appraisal engine is free on every plan.
From one invoice to a whole year
Run your locum work like a business.
Sessional tracks every session, invoice, expense and document from day one. No card to start.
